Mayor of Rage

In case you were wondering whatever happened to Late Night with Conan O'Brien star Pierre Bernard after O'Brien left for Los Angeles, well, Birmingham, Alabama has an interesting looking interim mayor:

Pierre's diatribes were some of the best bits Conan's Late Night had to offer, and often times hit a little too close to home for some of us nerds:

Papal bulls, indulgences & transubstantiation

On October 31, 1517, Martin Luther sent a now-famous letter to his Archbishop. He also [allegedly] nailed a copy to the door of the local church. You rock, Martin. Well, you know, except for the whole antisemitism thing. Anyways, The Briefcase is happy to provide some Protestant entertainment for you below. Happy Reformation Day, everyone!

All you Lutherans, get outta yo' seats...
Martin Luther Rap:

Every year this probably gets posted a bazillion times, and so we at the Briefcase follow suit - "The Reformation Polka." It begins about 1:03 into it, we thought it was humorous:

So they got Joseph Fiennes to play the lead in Luther - I have one question: Was the great William Forsythe not available? Sheesh...
"Yeah I heard of him, didn't he play hockey for da Red Wings?"

Tuna With a Heart

So I'm flipping through the telley this morning trying to find a channel that wasn't blathering about the Clemens hearing and I saw this guy named Congressman Waxman yipping on about who knows what. Then it hits me, he was the president of Schooner Tuna in 1983's Mr. Mom! Remember the "Tuna With a Heart"?

Howard Humphries or the distinguished gentleman from California?

The fellow in the left two images is the late Canadian character actor Graham Jarvis. Jarvis was best known for his steady work as a character actor on many, many television shows over the years, including the short-lived soap opera parody Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman. More recently he portrayed one of the grandfathers on 7th Heaven (the other was the great Peter Graves). Unfortunately Jarvis lost his battle with multiple myeloma in 2003, passing away at age 72.

Anywho, I just figured I'd share a look-alike (albeit an obscure one) for my first blawg of aught eight. Enjoy. Feel free to scroll through all my past doppelganging fun here.

Been Caught Stealin' on C-SPAN

Ever wonder whatever became of Jane's Addiction frontman Perry Farrell? I turned on C-SPAN the other day and there he was, the distinguished gentleman from Connecticut's Third District addressing the House. But the chair recognized him as Rosa DeLauro. Must have been my mistake.

RocketWoman, burnin' out her fuse up here alone...

What about this one: Lisa Nowak, former astronaut,
Navy test pilot, engineer, and diaper enthusiast -
possible relation to SNL player Seth Meyers? Oops I Crapped My Pants can hold a lot of dung! For more thoughts on Lisa, click here...
(Google/Gmail/Blogger login required, sorry.)

*Addendum: Welp, the article to which that link referred to is no longer available. Lucky for you I saved the article and my comment to it:

women are crazy

Houston, We Have a Problem
Cops say Lisa Nowak drove 900 miles in diapers so she wouldn't have to stop on trip to confront romantic rival

can i take an example of one absolutely crazy woman who performed an unprecedented act and then use this as a blanket example to prove that all women are crazy? despite all of the logic and science in the world, the answer is YES!

it is rather humorous though . . . i mean seriously, diapers? she probably spent as much time going to buy the diapers as it would have taken her to stop along the way to pee.

my comment:

she has been in outer space for crying out loud! she has a masters in aerospace engineering or something. but deep down under a facade of intelligence and rational thought, she's just a crazy whorin' homewrecker.

i mean, come on! you can't take 5 minutes to stop at a stuckey's and go pee? what if she had to crap? i guess that makes her a nasty crazy whorin' homewrecker.

and she's a freakin' astronaut. she can't spring for the $114 southwest airfare from houston to orlando? and they even have a toilet on the plane, she wouldn't have to wear her "oops i crapped my pants." i guess that makes her a cheap, nasty, and crazy whorin' homewrecker.

something must've happed up there, like a solar flare or event horizon or something. i smell a "chewbacca defense" coming on...

It's better to burn out than to fade away...

Poor Britney Jean, you can take the trash out of the trailer park, but you can't take the trailer park out of the trash . . . er um, ahem, something like that. Anyways, to get to my point: IT'S THE KURGAN!

Faster than Walt Flanagan's dog...

Have ya'll seen those commercials for Focus Factor? It's some sorta multi-vitamin marketed as speed that probably doesn't work, but the interesting thing about them is C.E.O. and spokesman Rob Graham. Rob's sporting some sweet, molting mullet-tude in this spot. He looks familiar, mmm... Then it hit me the other day - it's Walter Flanagan! None other than Fan Boy himself. If you don't know, Flanagan is the manager of Jay and Silent Bob's Secret Stash in Redbank, NJ. Once called the "Lon Chaney of the 90's," Walter has appeared in several ViewAskew productions, including 1994's critically acclaimed Clerks.

Tell 'em, Steve Dave!

Tell 'em, Steve Dave!

On a related note...

...We get Milk-Bone dogbiscuits for our dogs, and there's this dude on the back that looks familiar. Ever seen any Happy Madison production (i.e. Adam Sandler movie)? It's Allen Covert, who has appeared films such as The Wedding Singer and Big Daddy. He recently starred in Grandma's Boy. I guess the Milk-Bone gig is just supplemental income...

What I'm saying is all I really want is someone to hold me and tell me that everything is going to be all right.

Twisted Jeanie

So I'm flipping channels this weekend and I caught bits and pieces of Saturday Night Live, which was a rerun of the November 11 show with Arec Bardrin. I flipped to it during the musical performance, and instead of changing the channel (which I always do - I haven't watched a music performance on SNL since Technotronic performed "Pump Up the Jam" in 1989), something caught my eye and I stayed put. The musical guest was Christina Aguilera, er um, my bad - I should say "Xtina." And when I say something caught my eye, no, it wasn't like that. (For this night, she was on the opposite end of the spectrum from her "Dirty" video, donning what appeared to be close to a zoot suit.) Rather, it was this yellow mass attached to her head. I quickly thought "Gee, that's some fluffy hair..." before I realized it was a wig that Dolly Parton herself wouldn't be caught dead in. But instead of scoffing and changing it over to Wrestle Birmingham on WTTO, I kept watching. For some reason this was familiar. Déjà vu? I don't know, but I something about her hair & make-up made me "wanna rock." I wonder if Dee Snider's attorneys were watching...

Andy Del Gramatica?

I've always contended that Cuban-American acting great Andy Garcia moonlighted as a football player. Garcia's alter-ego for 16 years was former NFL placekicker & current Birmingham radio personality Al Del Greco. Upon seeing Del Greco's career winding up, the great thespian undertook the creation of a new identity, and in 1999, he created Martin Gramatica.

Can't you just see Gramatica assassinating Joey Zasa in The Godfather Part III? (click to enlarge)
Garcia juggled the three identities for two seasons, but retired the Del Greco character in 2000. Gramatica's future is questionable after the 'Boys performance this weekend. I can't wait to see who Andy's going to come up with next...
(Espn.com's "Page 2" contends that Gramatica is actually "The Great Gazoo" from The Flintstones.)
